Compound nouns exercise ;-)

Overwork- one of the compound nouns we've learnt this week!

'Overwork is surely one reason why, for example, Americans have nearly twice as much chance as Europeans of suffering from chronic illnesses. […] According to the Gallup-Healthways survey, those countries that have the best work-life balance and shortest work hours, including Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands, tend to have the happiest people.'

What are some of the implications of overwork? Why do you think some people work too much? Is it out of necessity or maybe choice?

I'm looking forward to your comments.

  1. The most obvious reason I think is the environment where people are involved in. They cannot avoid this busyness thing if they are living in a bustling city. Overwork usually causes over tensional nerves and mental or physical disease. People still, however, have to work hard to catch up other ones pace so as not to be fired. I do not think people have choice unless they change their life environment such as immigrating to other slow-pace countries or cities.

  2. In my opinion, there are two main implications of overworking: first of all, the time to expend in leisure activities could be drastically reduced, and, secondly, the possibilities of have a heart attack could be increased.

It is a fact that some people work too much but I suppose that there should be so many different answers as overworkers exist. However, if I have to give my viewpoint, I believe that regarding to high-class jobs it can be found more “workolism” than in jobs with a wage just over the minimum, where, by contrast, it might be more necessity to bring money to home than a personal choice.
